چکیده

Profitability of calf-fed and back-grounding yearling systems was determined based on actual production data and prices from 1996 to 2007, and variability across years was compared. The two systems exhibited similar profits, on average, but the calf-fed system showed less profit variability, suggesting there is more risk inherent in a yearling back-grounding and finishing system. Also, profitable years were more apt to have less variable corn prices.

The Economic Effects of Sorting Cattle by Weight and Time of Year into Different Production Systems1

A 2-yr study using 288 steers each year was conducted to determine the economic effects of sorting and feeding genetically similar cattle in different production systems. Steers were purchased at weaning in November and assigned randomly into sorted or unsorted groups. Unsorted steers were assigned randomly to 1 of 3 production systems: calf-fed steers (enter feedlot after weaning), summer year...

Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Calf- and Yearling-Fed Beef Production Systems, With and Without the Use of Growth Promotants

A spring calving herd consisting of about 350 beef cows, 14-16 breeding bulls, 60 replacement heifers and 112 steers were used to compare the whole-farm GHG emissions among calf-fed vs. yearling-fed production systems with and without growth implants. Carbon footprint ranged from 11.63 to 13.22 kg CO₂e per kg live weight (19.87-22.52 kg CO₂e per kg carcass weight). Enteric CH₄ was the largest s...

Effects of Sorting Steers by Body Weight into Calf-Fed, Summer Yearling, and Fall Yearling Feeding Systems

Two years of data (288 steers/yr) were used to determine if sorting cattle by BW into different production systems would decrease overweight carcasses (>431 kg) and hot carcass weight (HCW) variation. At receiving, steers were assigned randomly into sorted or unsorted groups (n = 144 steers/group). Within a group, steers were assigned to 1 of 3 feeding times: 1) calf-fed (entering the feedlot a...

Adiposity of calf- and yearling-fed Brangus steers raised to constant-age and constant-body weight endpoints.

We tested the hypothesis that fatty acid biosynthesis and adipocyte diameter and volume would be greater in s.c. and i.m. adipose tissues of calf-fed steers than in yearling-fed steers at a constant BW, due to the greater time on feed for the calf-fed steers. Conversely, we predicted that the capacity for s.c. and i.m. preadipocytes to divide, as estimated by 3H-thymidine incorporation into DNA...
